“And Samuel said, ‘Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.’” 1 Samuel 15:22-23 (Context: 1 Samuel 15:1-34)
Sacrifice is generally lauded as virtuous practice. To offer one’s property, comfort, time, energy, or even life for the sake of another is the very definition of love! However, a token sacrifice, offered to absolve one of the responsibility to truly love, is an insult. One who sidesteps a “minor” expectation from the Sovereign Creator is no more likely to gain His favor with a ritual sacrifice than a witch! We must not presume God will favor our piety if we refuse to offer our whole selves to Him in obedience.
- Which of God’s commands do I presume to modify or ignore?
- “Father, please show me what part of me has not yet been sacrificed to You. Please give me the courage to surrender it all.”
