Together Day by Day: Go In Peace

“[Hannah said] ‘Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.’ Then Eli answered, ‘Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.’” 1 Samuel 1:16-17 (Context: 1 Samuel 1:1-28, 3:1-21)

Sometimes troubled people turn to destructive, even sinful behaviors.  It’s common enough that when Eli saw Hannah behaving oddly he jumped to a condemning conclusion.  But Hannah was different.  Hannah turned to God in her vexation.  Eli forsook his assumptions and gave her the encouragement she needed. “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to Him.”

  • “Father, when I’m vexed, help me turn to You as Hannah did.”
  • “Lord, give me grace to see the heart behind the actions.  Help me bring your peace to troubled hearts.”
