What does the word ‘Shema’ mean? What were the 3 things in the Shema that God wanted Israel to know?

The word “Shema” means to listen, hear, or pay attention. In Deuteronomy 6, God wanted Israel to know three important things in the Shema: 1. The Lord (Yahweh) is one—there is only one true God. 2. They should love God with all their heart, soul, and strength. 3. God’s commands should be in their hearts so they can love and obey Him fully.

What 3 things does God warn Israel not to do?

God warned Israel about three things:

  1. 1. Don’t forget His commands—They needed to remember and teach them to their children.
  2. 2. Don’t commit idolatry—They should worship only God and not turn to other idols.
  3. 3. Don’t test the Lord—They shouldn’t doubt or question if God was really with them, like they did in the past.

What big question does Deuteronomy 6 raise?

The big question is: Does Israel have the right kind of heart to truly love and obey God? Since Adam and Eve sinned, every person is born with a sinful heart. So, can Israel really keep God’s law perfectly?

Why is God jealous? Is this jealousy a good or bad thing?

God is jealous because His people belong to Him, and He doesn’t want them to turn to other gods. This jealousy is good because it is not selfish—it’s about protecting what is rightfully His. Just like a husband and wife should be faithful to each other, God’s people should be faithful to Him.

What does Deuteronomy 6 teach you about Jesus?

Deuteronomy 6 teaches us that Jesus is the only one who perfectly obeyed God’s law. While Israel and all people fail to love and obey God completely, Jesus kept every command. He loved God with all His heart, soul, and strength. Because of Jesus, we can be saved and follow Him in obedience and love.
