  1. Who were some of the promising descendants of Abraham mentioned in Genesis 37?
Some of the promising descendants mentioned in Genesis 37 were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Joseph, and Benjamin. These were the sons of Jacob, who was also known as Israel. In the passage, it’s mentioned that Jacob’s sons, particularly Joseph, were seen as potential candidates for fulfilling the promise of the Messiah. However, their actions and character traits are examined to see if they align with the qualities needed for the fulfillment of God’s promise.
  2. What were the dreams that Joseph had, and what did they symbolize?
Joseph had two dreams. In the first dream, he saw bundles of wheat bowing down to his bundle of wheat. In the second dream, he saw the sun, moon, and stars bowing down to him. These dreams symbolized Joseph’s future authority and prominence over his family. The dreams caused jealousy and resentment among Joseph’s brothers, leading to conflict and eventually Joseph being sold into slavery.
  3. How did Joseph’s brothers react to his dreams, and what did they do to him as a result?
Joseph’s brothers reacted with jealousy and anger upon hearing about his dreams. They resented the idea of bowing down to Joseph and saw him as arrogant for sharing the dreams. This resentment ultimately led to them plotting against Joseph. They decided to sell Joseph into slavery, showing their extreme animosity towards him. They even went as far as dipping his coat in goat’s blood to deceive their father into thinking Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.
  4. What important lessons can we learn from the story of Joseph and his brothers?
One important lesson is that sin brings conflict and division. The jealousy and resentment felt by Joseph’s brothers led to betrayal and harm. This illustrates the destructive nature of sin and its consequences on relationships. Another lesson is that God preserves His people even in the face of adversity. Despite being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph’s story doesn’t end there. God remains with him and ultimately uses him for a greater purpose.
  5. How does the story of Joseph foreshadow the coming of the Messiah?
The story of Joseph foreshadows the coming of the Messiah, particularly in the suffering and betrayal experienced by Joseph. Just as Joseph was rejected by his brothers, sold into slavery, and faced trials, Jesus, the Messiah, also faced rejection, betrayal, and crucifixion by His own people. Joseph’s eventual rise to power and ability to save his family during a time of famine mirrors Jesus’ role as the Savior who brings salvation and redemption to humanity.
  6. What does the story of Joseph teach us about God’s faithfulness to His promises?
The story of Joseph teaches us that God remains faithful to His promises despite the actions of sinful individuals. Despite Joseph’s brothers’ betrayal and Joseph’s suffering, God’s plan for Joseph’s life and the fulfillment of His promises remained intact. God’s faithfulness extends beyond the immediate circumstances, ultimately leading to the fulfillment of His promise to send the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who brings salvation and reconciliation to humanity.
