Announcements
Our deepest sympathies to Paul Setlech on the death of his mother, Rosalie Setlech, on Tuesday, May 13th.
Next week we will recognize those who are graduating from the Bethany Church family. If you would like your graduate to be included in that list go bethanycentral.org/graduates and fill out the form there for each of your graduates. Let us know their name and where they are graduating from so we can recognize them.
SummerFest is a special youth group event for 4 Wednesdays each summer. The theme this year is Summer of Courage. It’s a time of fellowship, fun, and teaching from guest speakers. It runs from 6-8:30pm on the dates of June 11th at Cottonwood, June 18th at the Plattner’s, July 9th at the Gray’s, and July 16th at Bethany. Go to bethanycentral.org/summerfest for more details and locations of each meeting place.
Icebreaker: If you invented an ice cream flavor, what ingredients would it have, and what would it be called?
Discussion 1: The Syrophoenician woman, a Gentile, persistently asked Jesus to heal her daughter. Why do you think Jesus tested her faith, and what does her response reveal about her understanding of Jesus?
Application 1: Despite Jesus seeming to deny her at first, the woman persisted. What does her answer in v28 teach about the nature of faith? In what ways is faith persistent? How does faith cause us to pursue Jesus at all costs?
Discussion 2: Jesus healed the man in a very personal and unique way: by taking him aside and touching his ears and his tongue. Why do you think Jesus used this approach, rather than simply speaking a word as He had done before?
Application 2: Jesus’s approach shows His deep care for each individual’s unique situation. How can we show personal care and compassion for people in our lives? How can we pay special attention to the people around us?
Discussion 3: Both stories show Jesus ministering to people outside traditional Jewish circles — first a Gentile woman and then a man in a Gentile region. What do these stories teach us about Jesus’s mission? Why would Jesus’s interactions with Gentiles be hard for Jews to understand?
Application 3: The power of the gospel comes to save everyone, to Jews first, then to Gentiles (Romans 1:16). How do we as a church respond to the universal call of the gospel for every tribe, nation, and tongue? How can you personally be involved in the global mission?
