Which two names does Matthew point us to for Jesus Genealogy? Why? (Matthew 1:1)

He points to David and Abraham. Like God brought great promises and blessing to David and to Abraham, God was about to do a greater work through the Messiah. This is the right kind of King from the right line to save his people.

How many women were in Jesus Genealogy and why? What were their names?

Four Women: Tamar, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary. Jesus came to save us from sin, from shame, from scandal, and from ways we have sinned against him. Jesus was not ashamed to be from a family of sinners because Jesus came to save a family of sinners. These women show that you can’t always judge a book by its cover. Tamar was more righteous than Judah, and Bathsheba was taken from Uriah by David, and in a similar way, Mary was righteous and faithful even though it did not seem like it.

Why was is so important for Jesus to be born from the Holy Spirit?

For Jesus to save us, he had to embrace our full humanity. He became like us in every aspect, so that he would become a merciful and faithful high priest for us. Jesus took our full humanity, from the right royal line, without the Jeconiah curse, to reconcile us back to God.

What does the name Jesus mean?

The name Jesus means “Yahweh Saves” or “Yahweh is Salvation”. This shows that through the naming of Jesus, the Father was showing the reason why he sent Jesus into the world, to save his people.

How do we know Jesus will fulfill his purpose for why the Father sent him?

We know this because the promise that Jesus “WILL save his people from their sins”. Jesus will accomplish why his Father sent him. Jesus did not come to free the people from Roman oppression. Jesus came to free his people from the reign and tyranny of sin, demonic powers, and death.

What does Jesus’ genealogy mean for you and me?

The Genealogy of Jesus shows that Jesus is the right kind of King we need. We have a King from the right royal line, our full humanity, his full divinity, and a king who will enter into our shame and sin to redeem us from it. He came for the sinner, the outcast, the unimportant, and the oppressed. He is not ashamed of where we come from, who we are, and what we have done. He is merciful and full of grace and is worthy of our belief, praise, and faithful devotion.
