1. How did David get a chance to kill Saul? What did David cut off of Saul?
Saul went into a cave in En-gedi to use the bathroom. David and his men were in the cave and David reached out and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
2. What did David do after Saul left the cave? Why did he realize cutting Saul’s robe was wrong?
David went out of the cave holding Saul’s robe and shouted out to Saul what had just happened. David realized that Saul was still the king publicly in Israel and David had just almost harmed God’s anointed King. David almost took it into his own hands to take the kingdom instead of relying on God.
3. Who did David call on to judge between him and Saul? What was David trusting in?
David called out to Saul asking God to be the judge between him and Saul because Saul was chasing David for no reason. Saul was in the wrong, and David was in the right. David was trusting that God would give him the kingdom whenthe time was right. David also trusted that God would bring judgment on hisenemies (Saul) when God wanted to. David trusted God.
4. What did Saul ask David to make with him? How does this show David wasa king after God’s own heart?
Saul asked David to make a covenant with him (a binding promise to not kill Saul’s family and show his family kindness). Saul probably did not know that David had already made a covenant with Jonathan. David shows that he is asking after God’s own heart because God always shows Israel covenant faithfulness and God will always keep his promises to his people.
5. How does 1 Samuel 24 point us to Jesus? How do you see David acting likeJesus did?
Just like David, our Lord Jesus was in danger for his life, he was innocent but people wanted to put him to death, and they did. Jesus did not take the kingdom before God’s plan and Jesus was in the wilderness and had a temptation like David when Satan tempted Jesus to worship him and then Satan would give Jesus the kingdom. Like David, Jesus waited on God’s righteous judgment and Jesus trusted in God’s plan for him. Jesus loves his enemies and saves many of them. Jesus is the true KING who shows covenant faithfulness to his people. What a savior!
