- How many tests does God give to Israel? Why does God test them?
3 Tests: bitter water, no food, and no water. God is testing them to see what is in their hearts. Will they trust Him to provide for them in the wilderness? - How many springs of water and palm trees does Moses mention? Why is that important?
God is reminding the people that just as He cared for the patriarchs, He will care for Israel now. He took care of the 12 tribes and Jacob’s 70 person family. He will take care of their descendants. - When God sent manna, were any of the people still hungry? How is this like Jesus’ miracle to the 5,000? (Read Matthew 14:13-21)
No, God gave them exactly what they needed regardless of how much they gathered. Jesus was showing He can provide for His people in the wilderness too because He is God. He is our good shepherd and will take care of us. - What does God tell Moses to do to provide water for the people? How does this point to Jesus?
God tells Moses to strike the rock and water came out! Jesus promises that whoever believes in Him will have rivers of living water come out of him. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives us the sustenance we need to keep going and keep believing in the wilderness. We are in exile right now, waiting for Heaven to come to earth, God’s ultimate promised land.
