1) Why did God send the Flood? How did man’s sin affect him?
– God sent the flood to judge the wickedness of mankind. It was not the sin of the angels that caused the flood, but the sin of man. God was sad and grieved at man’s sin. He was not indifferent, but was full of sadness, just like Jesus was when he saw Jerusalem (Matt 23:37).
2) Why did God choose to save Noah and his family?
– God chose to save Noah and his family because he was gracious. The Bible says that Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. It doesn’t say Noah earned favor, but Noah found favor. God was not going to leave his world, but was going to save it. God made promises back in Genesis 3 that he would surely keep. God always keeps his promises.
3) What promises does God make to Noah in Genesis 6:18-19?
– God promised that he would make a covenant with Noah, the first explicit covenant in the Bible. God promised that he would make this covenant with Noah’s family also. God promised that all the animals, both male and female would join him on the Ark, the birds and the land animals. God was faithful to bring them to Noah.
4) How long did the rain last? How high did the flood waters get?
– The rain lasted for 40 days and 40 nights and the waters got 20-25 feet above the highest mountains at the time and covered the whole world.
5) What does this story teach us about God’s judgment, God’s Grace, and God’s Salvation?
– This teaches us that God is able to save his people even when he brings judgment. God is holy and righteous and his judgments are holy and righteous. God is also gracious and provides a way of salvation for Noah and his family.
6) How does this story point us to Jesus?
– This story points us to the only place where we can be safe from the penalty of our sins, and that is by trusting by faith in Jesus. Noah’s Ark teaches us that it’s only by trusting in God’s Word, and taking refuge in the way that he says is how we can escape his coming righteous judgment. Let us trust in Jesus today for our salvation and we will be sure that when he comes again to judge and reign, that we will be safe and secure in him. This is all because of his great mercy and grace.
