1) Who did the spies stay with in the city of Jericho? How would this have put Rahab in danger?
They stayed with a woman named Rahab. By bringing the spies into her home, she showed that she was siding with Israel over the Canaanites and the king of Jericho. This would have made her a traitor to her people and could have resulted in her being killed.
2) How does Rahab keep the spies safe from the king of Jericho?
Rahab brings the spies into her house, she hides them in the roof, she lies to the king of Jericho and the army, and then she tells the spies to hid in the hills for 3 days so they can get back safely.
3) What did Rahab say to the spies that showed what she believed about Israel’s God?
She says that she believes God gave the land of Canaan to Israel and is afraid that she will be under God’s judgment. She wants to be saved from the wrath of God. She says that God is the one true God. He is the one who in control of the heavens and earth and she wants to find mercy from him. She wants to have a part of God’s covenant faithfulness that God has already shown to Israel.
4) Where else do we see Rahab mentioned in the rest of the Bible? What lessons does it tell us about her, about Jesus, and about God’s Character?
Rahab is mentioned in Matthew 1, Hebrews 11, and James 2.
-Matthew 1: Jesus came from the very people he came to save
-Hebrews 11: Rahab had faith that God would save her and that is why she decided to hide the spies.
-James 2: James says that Rahab had true saving faith because her faith led her to action. Her faith was a faith that responded by doing deeds that faith comes from.
5) How did God show ‘Hesed’ or Covenant Faithfulness to Rahab?
Rahab “the proud one” humbled herself before God and God gave her grace and mercy. God spared Rahab, God gave Rahab a husband, God placed Rahab in the line of Jesus, and God made her a part of his people. What mercy God gave! What forgiveness God gave! What forgiveness God can give us!
