1. Can you name the boundaries of the promised land? How far west, east, north, and south? Who was the most important tribe?

West to the Mediterranean Sea. East to the Jordan River. North to the end of the River Euphrates. South to the Brook of Egypt.

2. Was God faithful to give Israel what he promised? What are the 3 main things Joshua 21:43-45 says God gave them?

Yes, God was faithful to have everything he said come to pass. The Bible says not one word that God promised Israel failed. First, God gave them the land and they settled there. Second, God gave them rest in the land. Third, God gave them victory over the Canaanites. Anyone Joshua fought against, he defeated.

3. Even though God gave Israel this land, what shows us that the conquest was not finished? What was God’s warning? (Read Joshua 23:4-8.)

There was still land to be conquered. There were still Canaanites in the land down on the coast by the sea known as the Philistines, the Gibeonites, and people far up north. Israel did not fully cast out all the Canaanites. God’s warning was for Israel to not go and serve their gods or intermarry with them. This was not because they were a different ethnicity but because they served another god.

4. What is the choice Joshua gives them? Can Israel do this?

Joshua gives them a choice; serve Yahweh or serve other gods. Joshua tells the people that they will not be able to fully serve God. Eventually, they will go after other gods because they don’t have a heart that will love God. They need a new heart! (Deut 30:6).

5. What does Jesus provide that Joshua never could?

Jesus, whose name is Joshua, comes and he fulfills everywhere Joshua failed. Jesus conquered sin, Satan, and death. Jesus is the greater Joshua who conquers our enemies, has promised us eternal life! The entire world is our promised land. Jesus gives us rest from trying to earn our salvation and he will fully give us rest when we are with him eternally. He gives us now a new heart so that we can love God.
