The number one reason I don’t initiate conversations with strangers isn’t that I think they’re too busy. It’s not because I’ve tried and been ignored too many times. It’s not even because I can’t think of something warm and friendly to say.
It’s because I’m too busy.
I rush from point A to point B with my head down — not because there aren’t opportunities, but because I haven’t built any margins into my life.
What Are Margins?
Margins are intentional pockets of time that aren’t consumed by a to-do list or schedule. They are moments where we purposefully remain available — for God to move and for unexpected connections with others. Margins are planned flexibility.
Why Don’t We Have Margins?
There are two common reasons people lack margin in their lives:
1️⃣ Lack of Planning – Some people simply don’t plan for it. Proverbs 21:5 reminds us, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage, but everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty.” Being intentional about our time allows us to create space for meaningful encounters. The old saying, “Failing to plan is planning to fail” is absolutely true and what this verse in proverbs is also counseling.
2️⃣ Desire for Control – Others resist margin because it requires flexibility and humility. It means surrendering control over our tightly packed schedules. Proverbs 16:3 challenges us, “Commit your works to the LORD, and your plans will be established.” When we make room for interruptions, we make room for God to work. It also means giving up our most valuable resource; our time. It means investing our time rather than just “spending” it.
Following Jesus’ Example
There may be seasons in life where our schedules are naturally tight. But even in those moments, we can follow the example of Jesus, who allowed the needs of others and the leading of the Spirit to interrupt His plans.
For personal study, read Mark 5:21-43 and notice how Jesus’ plan to heal a little girl was unexpectedly interrupted by someone else in need. Yet, in the end, His flexibility led to even greater glory for God.
Where Can You Make Room?
Where might God be asking you to slow down this week?
What small margin could you create in your day to be available for someone in need?
Who might God want you to bless — even when the timing is inconvenient?
May you love God and others this week as you intentionally create space to Know Their Story.
