Malawi 2023 – July 25
Today we held the last day of VBS at RBC. We had about 325 kids in attendance with around 50 volunteers. All things considered, today went smoother than yesterday.
We loaded on the bus around the same time (7:30) to be greeted at the church by kids. Some had shown up as early as 7, and VBS didn’t start until 9. More kids continued to appear as we continued preparations for the day.
Instead of playing VBS music at the beginning of the day, the children sang songs they knew in their language such as “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” It was such a wonderful sound to hear.
We sang and performed the skit as we did yesterday, but then we tried to split them up by age group. Each group had their own area, and the leaders of different activities rotated.

The craft was paper plate shields with ribbon crosses that they were able to decorate. The recreation team played soccer, tug-of-war, jump rope, duck-duck-goose, and they raced. We added a third team of music leaders to teach some new songs to the kids.

Our plans with these groups changed slightly due to the fact that we needed more time for craft than expected, but we handled it well and some kids just didn’t get to sing.
We then had lesson time together. The kids listened really well today! Daniel preached on the story of Jesus and how we can walk like Him and with Him. We then did some more music time together, including our new song they learned earlier in the day.
We had the older kids eat snack outside and the youngers stay inside. From there, they left slowly, and VBS was over.
The team ate lunch, and we boarded a bus to the market for the girls to buy wraps (fabric they tie into skirts and such here). The market was tight and crowded, but super cool. Everyone who went (some didn’t fit on the bus) made it back on the bus, and the driver performed a 13-point turn to get us out of the market area.

We had some time to relax at Newton’s house. In that time, the power went out. We had pizza for dinner in the dark with candles and phone flashlights. Kondi brought a special treat for us to try. Roasted mice. Kondi, Jake, Mason, and Karter all decided to take a bite of fur off the stick.
Once those boys had brushed their teeth, we held our devotional time. Then we went over the schedule for tomorrow. The lights came on at 9:04 pm. Thank the Lord!
Our one sick team member was doing better tonight, but improvement is still needed.
We request your continued prayers for our congested and sick team members, the hearts of the kids at VBS tomorrow, and high flexibility amongst our team members.
