In Paul’s letter to the Romans, he wrote something surprisingly humble and deeply insightful: “For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you that you may be established; that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.” (Romans 1:11–12)
It’s striking that the Apostle Paul didn’t just want to minister to the Roman believers—he also expected to be encouraged by them. If Paul, the great missionary and teacher, looked forward to mutual encouragement, then surely we can adopt the same posture.
This is a principle worth carrying with us on our Know Their Story journey: We all need encouragement. And we all have something to offer each other. As we grow in loving our neighbors and engaging in meaningful conversations, let’s make space to share, listen, and learn from one another. Here are a few practical ways to do that this year:
1. Share your stories with the church.
Whether written or recorded, your story might inspire someone else to take a bold step. If God has been using you in conversation with others, let Jimmy know—you may have the opportunity to encourage the whole church.
2. Don’t overlook the story bins and ping-pong balls.
Each ball represents a real moment of care, listening, or gospel opportunity. Celebrate what God is doing—and contribute your own stories as well.
3. Talk about your conversations in your everyday communities.
Whether in your Community Group, Adult Bible Community, or while serving in nursery or youth group—share what you’re learning. Swap stories over dinner with family or friends. The more we talk about what God is doing, the more encouraged and equipped we become.
4. Ask others what’s worked for them.
Not sure how to start a conversation at the coffee shop or get to know a neighbor? Someone else in your church family might have a simple idea that could work for you. Just ask!
God has designed the church to be a source of strength and encouragement. As you continue on your Know Their Story journey, don’t go it alone. Be humble enough to receive, bold enough to share, and eager to learn from the faith of your brothers and sisters.
Let’s follow Paul’s example—giving and receiving encouragement as we seek to know others and make Christ known.
