Colossians 4:5 says, “Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity.”
Making the most of an opportunity doesn’t always mean diving into a deep conversation or sharing the gospel immediately. Sometimes, it’s as simple as offering a warm smile, speaking a kind word, or asking a thoughtful question.
At the very least, it starts with noticing people. When someone crosses your path, make eye contact, smile, and see if they are open to engaging. If you sense the Spirit leading, take the next step — initiate a conversation and look for an open door. But it all begins with lifting your head and truly seeing the people around you.
So, what should go through our minds when we encounter someone at the gym, in the drive-thru, or walking past us on the street? Here are four truths to guide our hearts and shape our interactions:
1️⃣ Heaven and hell are real, and every person has an eternal destination.
📖 Matthew 25:32
This truth should stir in us deep compassion and an urgent desire to love those around us. The next time you see someone at the grocery store or at work, take a moment to consider: They have an eternal destiny—what might it be?
2️⃣ Every unbeliever is spiritually dead in their sins.
📖 Ephesians 2:1
Without the Spirit working, people cannot fully grasp the truth we share. This should remind us to be patient and not discouraged when conversations don’t seem to bear immediate fruit. Every step forward is a work of God, and He may be using you today to move someone closer to Jesus.
3️⃣ God can use any moment to bring someone to life in Christ.
📖 Ephesians 2:4-5
We never know when a simple interaction might be the spark God uses to draw someone to Himself. This truth should fill us with hope and expectation. Could God have a divine encounter prepared for you today? Are you looking for it?
4️⃣ Every person you meet is completely loved by God.
📖 Matthew 5:45
Even if all we can do is make someone feel seen and valued, we reflect God’s love in that moment. A kind word, an encouragement, or even a simple acknowledgment can be a gift from God to someone who needs it today.
May these four truths shape the way you see people today. May you notice them as God does — with love, compassion, and a desire to reflect His grace. And as you engage with those around you, may you take one step closer to truly Knowing Their Story.
